The NIE is your foreign identification number in Spain. You need it before you can buy, sign contracts or pay taxes. Start this early — processing times vary. You also need a Spanish bank account to transfer purchase funds and set up utility payments after completion. Most banks require your NIE and passport, so the two steps run in sequence.
